Profile of Online College Students


OnlineColleges recently created an infographic on the Profile of an Online College Student which is quite interesting.  Some interesting highlights are:

  • 6,142,280 college students take at least one course online
  • More than twice as many women as men enroll in online learning
  • Over 90% of online students say their career is their primary motivation for returning to school
  • Health Care is the Top Industry that the online students seek to enter
  • 68% choose to learn online to better juggle family and work responsibilities with school
  • 37% of online college students report that the lack of face-to-face contact with instructors, students is a problem
  • 31% of online college students pay with some form of financial aid, such as student loans.

    在線課程教育,目前在台灣似乎還未能向美國一般普及。最主要是學校內部,能否接受及承認學生跨系甚至跨校去選修相關課程。
    國外在線課程教育提供更多的選擇和靈活性,於虛擬學習計劃上擁有廣泛的專業培訓選擇專業成長課程。另外追求職業發展工作的成年人,可以獲得額外的技能或新職業網上先進程度,最大的好處可以減少他們的時間遠離辦公室。從職業資格證書到博士學位 ,網上學院幾乎提供了每個學生和學術的需求度。
    在台灣,目前有社團法人台灣開放式課程聯盟有這個管道,稍許可以達到自學的機會與效果。

    越來越多學校開設網路課程了,網路課程脫離了時間、空間的限制,不在侷限在教室裡,只要有網路,便能學習。但是在台灣,線上課程還未被大多數的學校所接受,不外乎怕學生偷懶、作弊等,所以大多用在一些無關緊要的課程,例如公務人員的研習,但是那是建立在既有的考試測驗中,當你的課程需要產出型的成果,我相信,偷懶、作弊等行為便不再也用,為了獲得學習成果及產出結果,學生也會努力的。

    線上課程也許適合面積比較大的國家,只因為交通的問題,但讓我想到除了真正交通外還有甚麼是需要且適合線上課程的,我想應該城區資源差異的部分,像我們在一些偏僻的地區學校能設這方面的課程,學生也會更多受教機會,也可以不擔心教師去留的問題,畢竟較為偏僻的地區還是有師資參差不均的問題。
