Mobile 2.0 is Here


With the recent advances of mobile technologies as well as Web 2.0 technologies that harness the collective intelligence of users, there has been a lot of discussion on mobile 2.0 in Europe for the past year. Mobile 2.0 already started to emerge. Basically, mobile 2.0 provides access to a Web 2.0 service via a Mobile Web Browser or applications that represent one aspect or feature of Web 2.0 such as user-generated content, community, collective intelligence, or rich media. Mobile 2.0 will integrate the social Web with the core foundations of mobility – personal, local, always-on and ever-present. Furthermore, these services are based on a new generation of wireless devices that enable rich, interactive services that integrate the full range of mobile consumer favorite features including talking, texting, capturing, sending, listening, and viewing. Mobile 2.0 could be another revolution that will dramatically change the Web and the mobility landscape that we currently know. Rudy De Waele of m-trends.org indicates that the mobile Web will become the dominant access method in many countries of the world, with devices that become more hybrid and networks that become more powerful and accessible. Mobile 2.0 will soon create new exciting opportunities for mobile learning.

Two weeks ago, Daniel Appelquist delivered his presentation “Mobile Ajax and the Future of the Web” at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. In his presentation, he indicated that the majority of Web usage worldwide will be mobile in next 5 years. Mobile application developers are increasingly choosing the Web as a platform.     Mobile technology is exactly what the name implies – technology that is mobile. Mobile tech devices include laptop computers, mobile phones and smart phones, PDAs MP3 players, digital cameras, wireless, notebooks, high-end phones with more advanced capabilities, personal digital assistants, etc. among the advantages of this technology is that it leads to great flexibility in working. It can also improve the service provided to the users.

    The drawbacks of this technology are costs involved in setting up the equipment and the training required to make use of mobile devices.

    各項通信技術的進步,通信頻寬的增加,促使了行動技術的應用發展,而透過web 2.0功能應用所發展出來的Mobile 2.0,確實令人期待。

    從老師所張貼的二份簡報資料裡,我試著整理出一些想法:
    1行動載具的快速發展,讓許多想法、研究得以在日常生活中實現,滿足需求。
    2通信傳播技術的發展,讓許多影音、大量的資料,可以在短時間內相互交流傳遞。
    3由Web 2.0所發展出來的概念與社交網路,逐步朝「無所不在」的理想邁進。

    其實,技術與應用是互相因果的循環,彼此激勵著,才能讓科技往好的方向發展,從一個教育工作者的立場來探討,Mobile 2.0所帶來的消息是令人高興的,先不思考應用在中小學教學上的種種困境或目前的限制,那會令人灰心的。我們要具備的想法是,對於整個科技應用的發展趨勢、工具開發的現狀等等,身為教師的我們應該有這一方面的素養與知識,才能在將來的內容建置、開發應用上,提供一些想法,或是做到一些好的作用。

    對於 open source 這一個議題,我比較有興趣,之前有接觸了 openmoto的議題,一直覺得web 2.0和Mobile 2.0的交相發展應用,就是要open的概念,能夠連結全球所有的網絡,讓自已真正無所不在的交流、學習。

    而目前數位學習以逐步推動運用於行動式裝置上,並建構mobil教材內容,我想運用Mobil 於教育領域中的確能拓展學習場域並提升學習品質與成效。

    不過對於Mobil learning逐步發展的現今,我仍有一些建議與顧慮:
    我想不論是數位學習或是行動學習的主要目的與創始理念就是為了協助教學並促進教學成效,但是不要為了科技教學而教學科技化。此外關於科技儀器的電磁波對人體的影響或其生物效應目前還沒有明確的定論,隨著無線通信的發達,手機等行動載具也越來越普及化,演至今日,幾乎是人手一機的程度,而由近年來的研究報告中指出,哺乳動物的神經系統可能是對電磁波最敏感的組織(劉奕成,民96),所以個人認為射頻電磁場的生物效應之研究也更加顯得重要。最後,個人認為在行動載具的推廣或教學應用上還是要注意其安規與使用規範。

    Daniel Appelquist says the future of browsing is mobile. I think he is absolutely right. It is easy to look around in any group and see who is using a phone to browse the web. I notice students doing it all the time in my classes, so why not harness that technology in education? It just seems to make sense.

    I can see mobile technology as a way for “anyone, anywhere, anytime education.” Students can access class information, notes and lectures while waiting for the bus, commuting to their jobs, jogging at the track or any number of places. Students won’t necessarily have to download this stuff ahead of time to watch or listen to during these activities. They can access right from their phones, as long as they have a cell phone connection.

    I was interested in the slide presentations although it isn’t always clear what the authors were going for with some slides. I guess you just had to be there to hear it. Too bad the audio hadn’t been recorded and then synched to the slides.

    It’s very interesting to me how far behind the States are in the world of mobile technology, especially for educational use. I see that this was posted in 2008 and many countries were neck deep in mobile 2.0 as the cutting edge technology, while it is still taking time to emerge in the US. That being said, the potential and the emergence of such a young technology is amazing. In high school I didn’t even have a cell phone, and now I sleep with mine a good bit. It’s crazy how fast some things become integral in life.

    I do agree that mobile 2.0 is hitting the ground running and is becoming something that every business or organization that offers a service needs to consider when designing their web presence and ideas for content delivery. Right now it seems that location based programs are gaining a lot of momentum and augmented reality is finally pushing the door open.

    I can’t believe that some universities still do not offer a way to navigate their sites on mobile phones so that students can do things like add or drop classes, etc from their phones when it’s convenient for them to do so. It really hurts institutions of higher learning when their technology is not up to par nationally and internationally, and many still do not recognize that. You would think that would be on the top tech to-do lists for institutions that are that far behind. Unfortunately, some people and businesses are still in the dark as far as the benefits to them and to the consumers that they are providing services to. If their eyes do not open soon, they’ll be left in the dust and consumers will buy products and use services that make it more convenient for them to do so.

    These presentations are informative and led me to look at a few more on the topic that are a bit more recent on slideshare. I was interested in the AJAX presentation’s thoughts about apps being a fad, so mobile info and applications should be web based so they are accessible across many devices. Interesting, good post!

    對於簡報中的一句話感到很有趣:「Within 5 years, the majority of web usage worldwide will be mobile.」,如果以當時2008年到現在2010年算是過了一半,mobile web已經成為風潮,手機上的使用不再受到網頁支援的限制,在科技的發展質和量永遠超乎我們的想像,加上2.0的這些工具也是大量的發展,所有的資訊已經是打破時間空間,立即產生了。我覺得這樣的發展是很好的,尤其是用在教學上,老師可以立即給學生個別回饋,不用等到開機、上網,而是只要在手機上或是電子書上就可以進行。學生也可以收到同學或學校,甚至是其他學習資源所得到的內容,並且再回饋、再分享出去。
    但是,科技的發展一定不只於此,讓我想像一下,五年後的學校教育會是什麼情況呢?也許隨著web 3.0的發展而不再需要學生花那麼多時間到學校聽課,只要每天醒來,就開始學習和交友了。

    學校的學習很多會受到場地或設備的限制,例如自然課就要在自然教室上,因為裡面才有所需的量杯、酒精燈等教學器材和設備,對學生和老師來說都可能錯失不少教與學的機會,所以行動載具的改良和無線網路的發達,促使老師和學生能踏出教室進行學習,讓學生真正運用所學實際情境,且獲得更貼近生活的學習經驗。
    除了對教育上的影響外,行動科技也逐漸滲透生活各層面,例如人們利用手機做查詢地圖、閱讀電子書、購物、交談等活動,行動科技變成一項個人化的重要工具,對其依賴性也愈來愈高。
    投影片中最令我印象深刻的是,眾人拿起手機拍攝演唱會的畫面,它指出了行動科技的便利性,但卻讓我有點擔心,只要有照相或錄影功能和能上網的手機,可以隨時隨地拍好後立即上傳,若使用者心中沒有一把合理使用的尺,豈不要可能會生活在戒慎恐懼中?

    有手機真的非常方便耶!從最古早的黑金剛手機到目前3G多功能手機,造型越來越好看,功能越來越多樣化–上網、拍照、錄影、GPS定位等,還可以將平面的Beyonce音樂圖片用手機鎖定後,立即轉變成可直接在手機裡將音樂下載播放;前陣子看到一篇有趣的新聞報導”將個人卡片(如信用卡or會員卡等)的條碼用手機拍下存檔,下次要消費/結帳時,直接從手機顯示條碼感應即可,再也不用帶一大堆卡片出門”,若此功能真的正式開放,屆時一定又會掀起一大改革風潮,不過,現階段仍有很多問題需要先克服,就先靜觀其變吧!
    手機使用的年齡是逐年下降,若站在教育的角度來看待,未嘗不是一件好事,因為手機結合了相機+攝影機+電話+電腦+GPS的功能於一體,對於未來的教學模式而言一定會發生衝擊,若善加利用,則能夠提升學習的層次,加強學生的自主能力!
    例如說,到野外探尋鳥類的生活型態,分組進行:可利用手機當呼叫器,與老師/同儕連繫,GPS可隨時掌握學生位置,將所見所聞皆即時拍照攝影存檔,立即上網搜尋相關資訊,亦可隨時回傳到同一系統以便事後的統整。有效率的作法,能夠促使學生的參與動機提高,同時達到最佳的教學成效。

    目前我使用手機也大概就是上網收信還有上傳些相片以及分享及時訊息,Mobile 2.0的發展其實是一項非常方便的科技,在結合電腦與電話的功能後,所有social都能縮在一支小小的手機上,每一個icon都提供了一種服務,每一種服務又能為自己的生活增添不少的豐富度與多元性,例如:網路書城可以讓你不用帶著厚重的書跑來跑去,一支手機能讓你愛看哪本書就看哪本書,看不完還可以作書籤下次再從這裡看…這對於資源、金錢還有時間跟空間的節省有多大!

    當然,大家都分享了很多關於Mobile 2.0的相關運用以及優缺點,但實際上我自己使用起來,要推廣Mobile 2.0 最大的困境大概還是費用問題!目前我使用的是學生方案上網吃到飽:手機藍芽接筆電或桌電和手機上網兩者一個月學生專案450元,但是一般的家長如果小朋友手機超過兩三百元都會碎碎念了,何況要他手機能多一個功能Mobile 2.0一個月加上手機費可能近千元…一般的家長大概會吃不消吧!而且隨時隨地的上網如果沒有將不適合學生瀏覽的網頁加以篩選,這會不會也帶來另一個大大的問題?

    所以當這樣的科技產品要推廣要深耕在教育裡面,是不是應該思考如何妥貼的配套措施,可以給家長安心還有學生安全的使用才是關鍵!

    When Web 2.0 technology gaining its golden time recently, mobile 2.0 shows up. According to Dr. Yuen’s post here, mobile 2.0 provides mobile devices a platform to access to Web 2.0 service via a Mobile Web Browser or applications that represent one aspect or feature of Web 2.0. such as user-generated content, community, collective intelligence, or rich media. The integration of Mobile 2.0 and social Web with the core foundations of mobility – personal, local, always-on and ever-present would form the new trend for mobile learning in the future. I agree with the point that “Mobile 2.0 could be another revolution that will dramatically change the Web and the mobility landscape that we currently know.” Different from Web 2.0, mobile Web will become the dominant access method in the future, with devices that become more hybrid and networks that become more powerful and accessible. The new exciting opportunities for mobile learning created by mobile 2.0 technology would bring completely different experience of teaching and learning for both teachers and learners.

    Has been illustrated in the presentation connected in this post, QR Codes has also been mentioned. I have just raised great interest in QR Codes, for its belonging to mobile 2.0 technology. Supposing that learning new English words with mobile 2/0 technology, it is really an interesting process. Just like doing crossword games, the different way of memorizing new words would leave deeper impression to learners! The example I gave for QR Codes is also suitable for other mobile 2.0 technology in learning. I think mobile 2.0 technology upgrade the interaction in education to multi-levels, personal interaction, community interaction, personal-community interaction, etc. Combination mobile 2.0 and social networking just enlarges the ranges of communication and interaction. From the perspective of learning, mobile 2.0 would provide students a wider learning environment and more chances to gain knowledge.
